Ways to help preserve the valley

Membership

‘The Gwyddon Valley Group’ is a voluntary organisation consisting of local people who have an interest in maintaining and enhancing the beautiful Gwyddon Valley in Abercarn for future generations to enjoy. Our Members come from varying backgrounds, some in full time employment, and just give whatever time they can to help in this aim.

We are always looking for new members because the more members we have the more our voices will be heard and listened to.

Therefore, if you have an interest in this valley and would like a say in how it will be managed in the future or would just like to be kept updated with the changes planned, please get in touch by email (gwyddonvalley@gmail.com), or by using our enquiry form without any obligation, for more details.

Volunteering

The ‘Gwyddon Valley Group’ needs volunteers for activities such as

  • help and support for community social events,
  • repairing and installing fencing,
  • constructing benches for the valley,
  • litter picking,
  • building and installing bird boxes,
  • clearing paths, walls, areas of overgrown plants and undergrowth,
  • Re-instating ponds within the valley,
  • Tree planting and other environmental improvements.
  • Just popping up for a chat, show support and a free cuppa!

These activities take place throughout the year with details either emailed or WhatsApp to our database of volunteers.

If you would like to be added to our list to be made aware of volunteering activities and dates or want more details, just email us (gwyddonvalley@gmail.com) or by using our enquiry form

Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

You will decide how much time to give and there will be no pressure to get involved. You will never be asked why you cant attend! We understand and respect that commitments will vary by person and personal situations.

The Member group meets online around once a month, which provides us with the chance to share thoughts / concerns /opinions / plans / ideas for the valley. Again, no problem if you are unable to attend these meetings.

We keep a list of interested Volunteers and email / whats app when we meet to carry out various activities. How often we meet depends on what needs doing, weather etc. but as always if your not available no problem. Just turn up if you are.

Most new ideas raised by Members are also gauged through the group email so you can give your thoughts and opinions that way (if you wish).

You will also have the option of joining our WhatsApp group to keep updated with more everyday occurrences and we also send out emails with information and news. This is around once a month.

Any equipment required by volunteers will be provided by the group. Most volunteer work will take place outside so you will need to make sure that you are suitably dressed for the weather and for some light mountain-walking.

Although we will be carrying out activities like Fence Building, Bench Building etc. we also need volunteers to help with less physical activities like litter picking, undergrowth clearance, tea/coffee making and just being there to chat and support.

All activities are clearly explained so you can decide yourself whether to attend specific activities
